A factoid is actually not true.

Oxford says, "an item of unreliable information that is reported and repeated so often that it becomes accepted as fact."

The -oid ending means "like". So an ellipsoid is a shape that isn't an ellipse, but is like one, and a factoid is a statement that isn't a fact, but appears to be one.
