A long time ago, Chomsky pointed out that almost every US election was decided by a statistically very narrow margin.

As he pointed out, (paraphrased, as I can't find the original) "This isn't consistent with the idea of two parties offering a choice, but looks more like what you'd get if people had nothing to choose between the two parties and just flipped a coin". (Yes, he did say, "Flip a coin", just like you.)
