Actually, it’s lack of public transportation that’s bad for the working poor.
It turns out in America that the poor suffer disproportionately from cars. They typically end up costing a huge portion of their salaries, but more, a huge risk. The idea that you might not be able to work because you can’t afford to fix your car is a huge, daily fear for many poor Americans. More, as a poor person, you are statistically inhaling a lot more fumes and soot from cars.
I always laugh at Americans trotting out “the poor” in order in order to preserve something that is actually what they want. I mean, from living there for thirty years, Americans in general don’t give a shit about the poor, except when they can use them as some sort of foil to push consumerism somehow.
