Ah, I always had the impression based on results that Lee was a lot worse than he is made out to be, and you have given me reasons.
I play somewhat too much Go, and you see this error all the time - the player with one tactic, which they never change based on larger-scale strategic interests. Sometimes these guys beat me, because I'm not that good, but you don't see them ever getting beyond a very limited level that way.
What makes a truly great general like Belisarius or Hannibal, or a great commander like, grr, the rather horrible but very effective Churchill, is the ability to select the correct strategy, based not on emotion, aggression, or self-image, but on a rational evaluation of the situation in the small, medium and large scales.
