As an SF reader since the 60s, all of these details were always in the back of my mind.

However, phasers clearly aren't laser weapons. For one, how can a laser "stun"? For another, you can see the beams move, not just at the starship level, but even in hand-to-hand combat.

Let me be blunt here - the big issue in these shows now for me is that I don't think humans will ever get it together enough to make it to the stars. We can't cooperate enough not to destroy our own planet, or even to protect ourselves against an immediate threat like a virus. How will we possibly cooperate for the centuries that it would take, and spend the quadrillions of dollars that it would need, to establish colonies in other star systems?
