Yes, it seems unintuitive. Yes, I found his argument challenging but I was eventually won over. I will note that Dennett does not at all claim we live in a deterministic universe or not.
I am just starting what looks like his magnum opus, his recent Bach to Bacteria, which I just realized is a bit of a pun (but as a German speaker I think of the composer as Bachhhh which a guttural ch) and it promises to go more into the ideas.
