Carbon pricing was first introduced thirty years ago. Now over 20% of GHG are covered by it.
And yet since then the CO2 level has continued to grow and that growth accelerates over time.
Look at this graph: https://www.climate.gov/news-features/understanding-climate/climate-change-atmospheric-carbon-dioxide
Do you see any change at all starting at 1992, the year carbon pricing was first introduced with the Kyoto Protocol? From the graph, CO2 levels continued to rise at an accelerating rate. Half the greenhouse gasses emitted in all of mankind’s history have been emitted since the Kyoto Protocol.
Hey, I was really enthusiastic about carbon pricing in 1992! But thirty years later we have long slid past the point where we could avoid disaster, and now we're working on catastrophe.
Any scheme that allows people to pay to pollute will simply result in unlimited pollution, because the money supply has consistently grown exponentially for centuries now.
A system to deal with the climate catastrophe that actually worked would first slow the growth of CO2 and then stop and even reverse it. This is not happening.
You quote the IPCC like it's some wildly radical organization, when in fact it is a political organization which has been forced to cut back its conclusions again and again in order to make them more palatable to the member governments of the United Nations.
Unfortunately, we have pretended to act by fucking around with worthless shit for generations now, and it's far too late. Disaster is certain, catastrophe is now on the horizon. The difference? You can perhaps recover from a disaster.
We are unfortunately far beyond the point where non-drastic measures are possible. We should be treating this like the greatest war in history, and pulling out all the stops, not allow rich people to bribe us to pollute. Unfortunately, "sensible" people like yourself prevent this from ever happening.
Your comment about me wanting pollution to remain free is enraging bullshit. I can't see it as anything other than a deliberate poke in the nose.
No, deliberate polluters should be executed and their families left penniless due to reparations. Fossil fuel companies should be nationalized, their leaders charged with crimes against humanity, and if they are lucky, thrown in jail to rot for the rest of their lives.
I won't bother to list all the draconian measures we'd need to not devastate our biosphere, because I can already hear you laughing.
And you know you have nothing to worry about! No one will do anything like that. You, the "reasonable rational ones", will definitely win, and nothing will change. The free market FTW! Let’s set up an exchange to trade carbon credits, that will fix it! Like they say, it's easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism.
No, we'll continue along just as we have, playing empty games like carbon pricing that are convenient to the 0.1% richest humans, and we'll dramatically reduce the carrying capacity of the globe, exterminate a million species, and an awful lot of us, humanity.
I just got sent this: https://www.theonion.com/last-ditch-climate-change-report-provides-locations-of-1835244382. I got a bitter laugh out of it. Hope it amuses you.
