I recommend the book Against Civilization by John Zerzan. His argument is very hard to refute - that humans were better off in hunter-gatherer societies where we had a life expectancy in the mid-40s, but would only spend a few hours a day on "work" and the rest hanging out, and where we didn't destroy the world.
I mean, that sounds like the dullest life, and I would hate it knowing what I know now, but if I didn't...
