Disagree strongly. There's only so much information that you can process at one time. Most people clutter their workspaces with all sorts of junk.

I have one reasonably large monitor. I put it vertically, not because I like that format, but because it sits between two windows with a lovely view which I don't want to obscure.

I'm running on a laptop, but I don't even use its screen. I do use virtual desktops a lot - I have one for programming, one for correspondance, and one for time-wasting. I avoid switching until I get to a logical stopping point, so my cost of context switching is low.
