Every homeless person gets a buck from me, or whatever pocket change I have — and if I don’t have any of those, a smile.

I apologized to someone when I fished in my pocket and had nothing, and he said, “Please don’t apologize. You at least acknowledged my existence.”

I’ve worked amongst affluent people all my life, mostly technologists, and most of them think I’m crazy for interacting with the desperate. But I have in the past been broke enough to miss meals, and I don’t think they ever have.

Thanks for a great article!
