Fun article, but you missed the cause!

Around 40 years ago, the US government started moving toward not protecting its citizens against commercial criminals, because of the abject devotion to capitalism from both R and D sides.

And this lead to a host of ripoffs - from "pre-existing conditions" (an insurance term, not a medical one), to NFTs, to Spam callers as we all experienced.

I too miss landlines. I know landline numbers of places I lived in 45 years ago and of people who have been dead for 35 years. In hindsight, it was actually nice to leave the house and not be able to be reached, and of course the quality of the calls.
