Good read!
A much simpler explanation for the result - the people who consume the majority of the world's soft drinks don't actually care that much about the taste.
I remember once years ago a waiter brought me a Brooklyn Lager, and I tasted it and said, "That's a Bass!" She looked puzzled and took the drink away. She came back a few minutes later with a new drink and said, "We accidentally switched the lines, sorry about that. Funny, it's been that way all night and no one noticed."
Thing is, Bass and Brooklyn Lager look almost identical (Bass has somewhat less of a head) but dramatically different tastes - so different that I can visualize both of them in an instant and I haven't had either in over five years!
(I moved to the Netherlands, so I have a whole new world of beers.)
And I'm no supertaster. My nose is stuffed a lot of the time.
The lesson is that when they're consuming mass quantities most people simply don't pay attention to the taste
