And in the case of git, it's more than that. I put in the time to get very comfortable with git, and now I know exactly what is going on, and it's basically impossible for me to destroy my own work using git, so I can proceed at a really good clip.

Using some Git front end would have prevented me from doing that, by obscuring the important details and presenting me only with the results.
