Klosé's Celebrated Method for the Clarinet says something like, "The most important thing for an instrumentalist is smoothness", and that advice is good almost 150 years later.
And smoothness means a real relationship to time.
I'm not playing much recently, but I could at my peak make people sit up and pay attention simply by playing a scale, because I had that smoothness down. (Not that this got me anywhere really, but it was fun.)
