Hitler, himself, was widely seen as a marginal figure of amusement before he gained power. In Chaplin's autobiography, he mentions that he selected Hitler as the person to parody in The Great Dictator precisely because he seemed such a marginal figure, and then was kept up at night for years wandering if he had anything to do with Hitler's rise.

Mussolini also seemed to be a buffoon, until he wasn't.

Remember that history doesn't repeat, but it does rhyme. Also, tens of millions of Americans really do want to put people of color, queers, and leftists into concentration camps - just ask them, they aren't shy to tell you what they think.

Trump isn't someone who thinks or plans like regular people - he simply says random stuff and then repeats the parts that people find popular. He's like a Ouija board for the psychopath.

So don't be so sure about the future.
