I agree with everything you say, particularly your horror of the Jesus freak, but your prescription at the end isn't going to hack it.

Most humans live in cities. Even with the most intensive agricultural techniques, it takes at least an acre of farmland to support a single person. An acre is 43,500 square feet, whereas the average apartment size in America is about 800 square feet, and has two to three people living in it.

That means that if the average person took half their apartment and converted it to food production, they'd produce 0.5% of the food they eat.

Even a really large garden in the city is less than 1000 square feet, but you'd need 100 times as much to feed your whole family.
