I clapped but I disagree.
Speeches have an entirely different logic to most other utterances - they are closer to magic spells, and as such, you do not name your enemy in them.
Take Churchill - a pretty awful specimen generally, but very good at fighting the Nazis. Churchill generally avoided naming Hitler in his speeches, using insulting names like Corporal Schicklgruber.
Don't give the career criminal the free publicity! Refer to him by unflattering names, and let the listener do the work, and feel a bit smarter - this is a classic rhetorical device, and it continues to work to this day.
(And you know from our previous interactions that my opinion of Biden and the Democrats is deeply critical, but they have good speechwriters...)
