Christianity has always been like that.

Look at the main premise. A compassionate God of Love exists.

And if you don't spend every single day praising Him and telling Him how amazing He is, He will send you to Hell, where you will experience infinite torture for eternity.

This is sick. But this is what the Bible says. (And a lot of other really nasty things, too.)

The only way to get around this is to simply say that the Bible is completely unreliable. But then you aren't a Christian at all.
