I have heard this many times. My friend was stricken by schizophrenia which robbed him of everything. He said, in a rational moment, "I'd kill myself in a moment, but I could never do that to my mother."

A friend of mine died decades ago in a private plane crash, and we wondered, because everything in his life was going wrong for him at that time. When the final reports showed a mechanical failure, and that he was attempting to regain control of the plane all the way to the ground, it was a tremendous relief for everyone. Sorry we ever doubted you, Frank.

This one's a hard read, as you can imagine. Could this happen to any of us?! Or was Lubitz a weird monster? I hope to God the second is true. We can all understand crimes of passion or suicide to some extent, but systematically killing a hundred strangers and yourself?
