I have to quibble a little.

The observations of naked-eye astronomers have have been extremely useful for modern astronomy and have shown to be amazingly accurate - given the considerable limitations of naked-eye astronomy.

Ancient astronomers were dedicated and intelligent people who strove for the best accuracy they could. I always feel a great warmth for them, and I wish I could let them see what we have since discovered.

Thanks for a fascinating article!
