I mean, that's a really weird response. I am very very sorry you are sick, but some guy saying, "I don't want to write computer programs forever," is not a threat to your life.

I might add that many doctors have very satisfying careers because they work with the same patients their whole lives and see the kids they help grow up to be adults - or because they keep YOU alive when without modern medicine you wouldn't be. Programming is not so satisfying, precisely because most of us are doing things which have no great importance to anyone and won't really affect anyone's lives at all in a significant fashion.
