I read those first five John Carter books probably 20 times each! But I didn't see the movie.
Here are some obscure, very worth watching films for people who like the unusual.
John Frankenheimer's Seconds (starring Rock Hudson) is an honestly frightening SF movie with no aliens, spaceships or ray guns. B&W.
Two Vincent Price movies - The Raven is fairly well-known and is extremely funny Roger Corman Poe flick, with an incredible supporting cast, including Peter Lorre, Boris Karloff, Gene Tierney, and Jack Nicholson in one of his first movies, before he got acting lessons. I'm pretty sure it's in color.
The Mad Magician has an unpromising title but is more of a strange suspense film than a supernatural one, and a really good script where the characters act with humor and intelligence. I think it's B&W. I always felt it would make a really good modern remake, the dialog is snappy.
