I was born in London just ten years after this, and though the problem had abated, we still had a few super-thick fogs, which I remember, and there were still things like "fog lights" that had a peculiar yellow color I still remember.

However, I must strongly quibble with one claim.

We have known since almost the time of the Great Fog that it was caused by a temperature inversion. I grew up knowing this!

These new scientific papers go further into the mechanism, but they aren't proposing some brand-new mechanism.
