I wish I could find some argument to disagree with you, but I cannot.
It is incomprehensible and unconscionable that years after he has left office, Trump still has not been indicted on the dozens if not hundreds of felonies he has blatantly committed in a lifelong career of crime.
Both New York State and the IRS have been aware of the massive incongruities in his returns for at least four years. Many criminal actions were revealed by the Mueller report, and simply deemed not actionable because Trump was President. Trump’s attempt to extort the entire country of Ukraine resulted in their not getting key weapons systems — we will never be able to say if this contributed to Ukraine’s later invasion by Putin (Trump’s spymaster, quite likely), but why isn't Trump in jail for this alone?
The midterm elections were a hard deadline, and the forces of justice completely fell on their collective asses, and delivered nothing.
Now, due to the bottomless stupidity and malice of a large portion of the American public, the Republicans will regain a measure of control, and stymie investigations. Trump will announce his candidacy, and this will effectively render him immune to all laws of the land, as he was, apparently, for four years.
And the worst is this: I think very very few people will be surprised. I'm 60 years old, and I have tried hard not to become cynical, but at no time in this whole process have I for one second believed that a rich and powerful person would ever see any sort of punishment for their crimes, no matter how how obvious, no matter how stupid, no matter how criminal, and no matter how dire are the consequences of their criminal actions turned out to be.
I am, modestly, a student of history, and in that context, few countries or societies have ever come back from the position where their leaders can and do commit crimes without fear and compunction.
God help America.
