If Spotify is the future business model of music, then it means that 98% of future music revenue will be going to people other than musicians.
More, only two classes of people will be capturing that remaining 2% of revenue: the top 0.001% of artists, and spammers who emit thousands of very similar tracks which fit into some convenient search term.
The rest of us will get fractions of a penny on the dollar.
It would be the death of music. The idea that 99.999% of musicians are supposed to support themselves in some other job just for the privilege of making music, and see pennies a week for their work, makes me sick and sad.
I didn't know that Bandcamp doesn't allow covers. It makes sense in hindsight.
One of my favorite Bandcamp songs ever is in fact a cover of a Jacques Brel track - it's here. It's of course very possible that they simply didn't tell anyone: Brel has been dead for almost fifty years, I think it's fair game, particularly since it's such a good cover.
