I'm 62, still a developer, still enjoying it.
What's desolate is having to live in some dystopian hellhole and commuting for an hour or more each day. I work from home in an medium-sized French town, and when I log off, I can instantly walk around and look at the abbey, the cathedral, the parks, all the nice people.
I nearly always like the people I work with, but when work is over, why would I want to hang out with them? Generally I have little in common with them except the job. Few of them like avant-garde music or language learning, or any of my other interests, and why should they? I have a great wife, a charming dog, and a lot of actual friends, all over the world. Work is work, and my personal life is my personal life, and it's great.
