"Imaginary" is very harsh.

Just because there is no obvious organic reason for discomfort doesn't mean that it's "imaginary"!

Even if it were purely psychological, that wouldn't make it necessarily imaginary.

But beyond that, science doesn't really understand how pain works very well, though we continue to make progress. If you look at well-accepted phenomena like "neuropathy", in many cases there are no observable symptoms except the pain itself (which can be considerable, as I have experienced).

So it's perfectly possible that with better medicine, we'd discover that your lump in your throat was not purely psychological in nature at all.

Or not - who knows? - but the point is that to call your real discomfort "imaginary" isn't fair to you, yourself.

Sorry you have to put up with this.
