Imagine you paint dots on a balloon, each a centimeter apart. You inflate the balloon to twice its size. Now every dot is twice as far from every other dot, but no dot is at the center.

I got this explanation for the first time as a child around 1969. and it made perfect sense to me at the time and still does.
