In his epic book and corresponding TV series, Kenneth Clark uses the Great Lisbon Earthquake as the dividing line between Classical and Romantic art.

The earthquake shocked Europe, because it happened on Easter, and the death tolls in the churches were very high, but the "red light" district was unscathed. People lost faith in God (like He was doing such a good job before that!)

I suspect future historians, if they even exist, will similarly point to 9/11 as the dividing line between the post-modern period and the collapse period.
