Interesting but ultimately silly article. As if we didn't already know what our Great Filter is!
We are destroying ourselves with obsessive consumption - consumption that increases exponentially per person, a population that's also increasing exponentially, and waste that is also increasing exponentially.
We've know about this problem for well over 50 years now, and yet it has continued to grow exponentially. It's like the time to do anything to stop it is already decades in our past, but it barely makes a difference, because we're still determined to do nothing.
There isn't some magical boogieman on Mars that will kill us - it's the cancer of sustained exponential growth that started with the industrial revolution.
