This rock we live on is in a desperate state. The devastation of our ecosystem and consequentially of the human race seems inevitable.

It would be far, far better to invest the money in attempting to avoid that, and not spend a huge amount of money on a complete unrelated problem in the hope that some unspecified spinoff of that technology would be useful.
