A few companies value strong performers and decent humans and are good about rewarding them to keep retention: I might be working for such a company now, ask me in five years.

Generally, this is not the case.

Even Google, which treated its workers very well when I started there in 2004 and was still good in 2009 when I left, has degraded significantly.
