Nah, social media is a exploit of the part of the human "operating system" that deals with novelty.

Before "civilization", and even before humans existed, "novelty" often meant "danger". The creature that ignored the strange noise got eaten; its neighbor reacted and lived to reproduce and so animals learned to react to novelty.

Fast forward an aeon, and the world has been completely transformed by we big-brained primates who can still be distracted at any time by empty novelty.

Couple this with algorithms that automatically discover which empty novelties are the most attractive to people, and you have a recipe for disaster.
