No justification for the clods hitting on you here, but a hotel bar is by its nature going to be filled with lonely, desperate people.
Sometimes — occasionally — you’re forced to eat there because there is nothing else. But most of the time there are other restaurants within a minutes’ walking distance — and I might add that those restaurants are likely family businesses so you aren’t giving more money to some huge chain.
I remember hanging out with a university professor in a hostel somewhere who said he never stayed in hotels at all, even though they were more comfortable and he didn’t need to save money. I asked, “Why?” and he said, “How many times have you had a conversation like this one in a hotel?” I had to admit that the number was zero.
