No previous Presidential candidates said, "My running mate will be a white man".
During the debates, Pence will quite truthfully say, "If you weren't a woman or if you weren't a person of color, you wouldn't be here." This will be irrefutable, as Biden said exactly this.
Biden should have made the same choice, but without undercutting the candidate's qualifications in such an awful way.
While I'm far to the left, I'm also aware of Realpolitik.
Given how very many Americans would never under any circumstances condone a woman as President, and the existence of a comparably large and somewhat different group feeling the same way about people of color, I think that selecting a woman of color, particularly in such a patronizing, tokenistic way, is alienating the maximum number of voters, while not even attracting one new person to the fold.
I wish it were not so. But America is a cesspool of sexism and racism. Checkmating Trump's is more important than all other considerations put together. I wish Biden and DNC acted as if this were true.
