Not at all. If these things are simply projections, fancy images, then no great breakthrough is needed.

If I have a strong flashlight beam on a mountainside, I too can make that image accelerate with "00s of gs" or make abrupt turns.

For three decades now there have been persistent rumors that the US has a device to produce consistent radar "bogies" - essentially images that consistently appear on radar where there is no actual device flying around.

There have been noted incidents with the Mexican and then the Iranian air force that would be perfectly explained that way.

That such a technology could be adapted to produce visible images hardly seems impossible, particularly since they're so small and far away that you don't see any parallax between your left and right eyes.
