Oh, the human species won't go extinct. There are far too many of us, and we can survive in a wider range of environments than any other creature, even roaches.

What's going down is human civilization and without civilization, and in a compromised environment, the carrying capacity of the planet for humans will be a tiny fraction of what it is today.

So no, we can't get out from under our guilt by saying, "We'll all die and be forgotten." No, some fraction of humans will still be alive and cursing our generations for our pathological selfishness in a thousand years.
