Pretty damn funny that this is the only “covenant” between two humans in the Bible!

In England for many years, “David and Jonathan” was an oblique way to reference male homosexuality — “I think this is a David and Jonathan situation,” i.e. the two men must be lovers, or “Beware the sin of David and Jonathan!” i.e. no gay stuff, guys!

Both David and Jonathan, and Sappho, in some sense the female counterpart, are strong and mostly positive role models (the story of D&J is more morally ambiguous to be sure), so obsolete phrases like “Sapphic” give me some pleasure.
