Quibble here - this wasn't just Jesus. All babies were depicted as miniature adults pretty well everywhere in the world until quite late in human history.

And there were other ubiquitous flaws in paintings from those times that seem obviously wrong to modern eyes, like a lack of perspective.

As you say, this faded away when naturalism and realism took over.
