I’ve been working in tech for over 30 years, and I’ve asked for a little more money or other incentives every single time I was offered a job. Mostly I got the extra; sometimes I didn’t; but it was never a problem either way.

I was polite and professional, so were they. Why shouldn’t you ask for more? Why would this offend anyone?

Being offended at the very idea of negotiation is one of the key signs of an asshole. I’m going to continue to ask companies to sweeten their offers a little, and if I do eventually lose a job, I’ll be happy to know I avoided a lot of annoyance.
