Sic transit gloria mundi.
What's telling is how few popular comedians are actually politically intelligent, these days.
Decades later, the Smothers Brothers or George Carlin still come off as transgressive, topical, and very funny, but today's "controversial" comedians are almost always just reiterating the status quo and saying the quiet part out loud, with no hint of irony, and few laughs, at least for me.
And I'm not "things were better in the old days, off my lawn, rotten kids."
For example, even though the radio is horrifically bad, we are getting some of the most amazing new music ever. Check out this truly funny Jacques Brel cover, or this incredibly beautiful song that starts from almost nothing and builds into a beautiful and mysterious structure. (Here's another track by Matmos, much shorter but just as unique.)
TV has reached just astonishing levels of quantity and quality, even though as always 90% of it is crap ("Sturgeon's Law").
But somehow, comedy has been left behind. Go figure.
Blah blah, the coffee is taking hold. Thanks for another thought-provoking article!
