Someone I know had an attempted sextortion scam. They handled it well — came clean to their partner about the use of porn, and then asked me before doing anything.

The threat this time would be that they would send a video with your porn face on one side and the actual porn on the other to everyone you knew!

As I told my friend:

  • Probably no one would open the email.
  • The actual porn that was watched was very vanilla and no one would care.
  • If they tried to put in horrific porn instead, no one would believe it, and
  • They aren’t going to do any of these things anyway, because this is untargeted spam!

As I pointed out, the email didn’t even say specifically what site the porn was on or what it was — a giveaway.

If you aren’t shameless or technologically advanced or both, these scams can be pretty frightening. But then criminals are generally cruel people.

Thanks again for this excellent update. I read tech all day and I still get new information out of this newsletter.
