However, a nice man in the street had a long chat with me in fairly good English, and he passionately tried to convince me of intelligent design, and even gave me a little paperback for free (in English but written and printed in Turkey!) about how Darwinism was responsible for both the Nazis and the Soviet Union - I still have it.

In priest-ridden societies, there are a lot of scientists and scholars who are also devoutly religious. Many of them choose intelligent design as a way to reconcile the scientific facts about evolution with their religious beliefs. And yes, propaganda from US fundamentalists has definitely helped this along.
