You might be interested to know that repeated studies from the 50s to the 80s showed that most US soldiers would not actually fire their weapons at the enemy, but would aim over their heads, or just not pull the trigger at all.

They fixed that though, with a lot of propaganda and training exercises, and don't forget Hollywood.
