The bad news - just 1% of the US Defense Budget, spent every year, would in a decade or two give us a system to prevent this forever. But no one wants to spend that money.
The good news - meteors like the ones that killed the dinosaurs happen tens of millions of years apart.
I wouldn't worry about it. The real threat to humanity is ourselves - our relentless destruction of our environment. I expect that to come to a head in decades, as opposed to millions of years.
