The issue is this. If you start off by saying, "We want to hire a woman of color" and then don't talk about any other characteristics at all, it leads even the most progressive to suspect that competence and experience are distinctly secondary.
It's a terrible, terrible, terrible strategic move. It completely undercuts the value of the action! They should just name a woman of color as VP candidate and then say, "She was the best candidate, period".
As it is, they've just spent months undercutting her position, and if (please!!!) Trump loses, we're going to have to listen to four years of assholes saying, "She's only there because she's a black woman, as Biden told us repeatedly before he selected her."
