My theory is this — enlightenment is very wearing. Yes, most people go around with blinders on, but it also limits their stress potential — maybe people are just better off not knowing.

The more “woke” people are, the more stressed they are. My scientist friends agonize about climate change, but fools give the whole issue no mind.
