The US has 4.25% of the world’s population, but over 40% of the active COVID cases and almost 30% of the deaths. (And considering that US death rates are roughly 40% higher than this time last year, the true toll will almost certainly be a lot higher than this.)
South Korea, another liberal democracy, got their first COVID case on the same day as the United States did. They have one-fifth the US population and one-four-hundredth the number of COVID deaths. Their death rate is apparently a little below what it was last year at this time, because of lower flu deaths due to isolation
Another way to see it is this: South Korea has 50% more population than California in only one quarter its land area, and is much poorer at about half the GDP per capita — but South Korea has about 10% of the number of COVID deaths that California has.
(And I might add that COVID is basically over in South Korea, but it’s just getting started in the USA.)
Yes, a small number of countries are doing worse even than the United States. That doesn’t make America’s response good.
You aren’t going to convince me or anyone else that Trump is doing a good job at this. You aren’t even going to convince yourself.
You just say the Trump words because you’re in so deep, but the death toll in US is at twenty five 9/11's, and a new 9/11 worth of corpses every two days. You can’t just MAGA MAGA this huge and growing pile of bodies away.
There’s an old joke that a Republican is a guy who would ask Trump to shit in his mouth if he thought the liberal next to him would have to smell it, and it’s never been as appropriate as now.
