This seems consistent to me with a lot of Christians who don't go to church but identify with the teachings of Jesus. You could do a lot worse.

This family sound like nice people, to be honest. It's my belief that they simply let their kid present in whatever gender the child wanted, and if they had lived in, say, the Netherlands, we would never have heard anything about it as no one would have found it particularly interesting or shocking.
