This used to be commonplace amongst musicians. There are over a hundred pieces I might hear and say, "I played that" - in high school band, or as a cover in some other band as an adult.

Now with the rise of the producer/engineer and the eclipse of the instrumentalist, it's something of a dying tradition.

I have had this discussion and people make the claim that placing a sample of someone else's music in the matrix of your own is exactly the same. I disagree - pressing "play" on your CD player does not make you a conductor! - but I feel it's like explaining color to a blind person.
